Hawaii Land Trust News
The Hawai’i Island Land Trust is happy to alert you to the
SIXTH ANNUAL ROOTS BODYBOARDING CONTEST
AT WAI’AHA BEACH PARK on Ali’i Drive
ON SATURDAY, JUNE 28, 2008
FROM 8:00 AM TO 3:00 PM
This will be an exciting event at the birthplace
of bodyboarding in Hawai’i,
historically known as Honl’s. Wai’aha is a special place for
HILT as it was one of the most important land issues supported by HILT’s
board in 2005. Vice-President Richard Bennett, Ph.D. and then-President
Jocelyn Garovoy publicly testified on behalf of HILT urging the County to buy
Wai’aha from the condo developers who were intent on building a condo complex
at this culturally-significant Native Hawaiian site which is the makai end of
Wai’aha Ahupua’a.
With the strong and determined support of
the community, especially the surfers and bodyboarders who consider Honl’s
to be a ‘primo place’ and the County Council, the County purchased
this historically important property that has become very popular with locals
and visitors. HILT continues to support the efforts of a young group
of surfers and bodyboarders, organized as Malama Wai’aha, to take care
of this beloved place on Ali’i Drive.
Treat your family and yourself
to a great ocean event! And don’t forget to say “Aloha” to
Administrative Coordinator Oceya McQuillan at HILT’s seaside table!
